Veteran Integration Program
In early 2006, Longview Housing Authority (LHA,) began to meet with local veteran representatives to establish a plan to assist homeless veterans with housing, supportive services and employment services.
Veteran TBRA currently houses 20 homeless veterans and their families in scattered units throughout Cowlitz County. Participants include individual veterans (both male and female), single parents with children and two parent families. Participant ages range from those in their mid-20’s to those in their late 60’s.
LHA has VASH vouchers available to help homeless veterans find affordable housing. A Veteran Affairs Casemanger is available by appointment to help veterans with paperwork for the VASH program.
Vet Works contracts with local agencies and businesses to provide landscaping, janitorial, building maintenance and other employment opportunities for veterans unable to find work. Vet Works opened the Veteran Employment Service Center in February 2011. The Employment Service Center gives personalized hands-on assistance with employment training, resumes, interview techniques and other services that are not readily available to veterans in Cowlitz County. Businesses who are interested in contracting to Vet Works should call the Longview Housing Authority at: (360) 423-0140.
Vet Source is a website which serves veterans of South West Washington, providing information about services provides in Cowlitz, Lewis, Wahkiakum and Pacific counties. Information for services such as housing, food, employment, education, internet, transportation, health care and many other things are listed by county, by type of resources and there is a search feature as well. Vetsource.org is a great source for finding those things that a veteran might need for day to day living.
Veteran Integration Program (VIP) was developed to help break the cycle of homelessness among veterans throughout our region. By partnering with several other agencies, LHA is making this possible. Such partnerships include the local VFW’s, Disabled American Vets, WorkSource, Veterans Affairs, Partners in Careers, Americorps and many others.
