Housing Choice Voucher

RENT BURDEN (AFFORDABILITY) WORKSHEET

According to HUD regulations, Housing Choice Voucher participants may not pay more than 40% of monthly adjusted income for rent and utilities. If the gross rent (rent plus utilities) for the unit you select is less than line 8 below, you will be paying 30% of your income as rent. If the gross rent (rent plus utilities) you select is between line 8 and line 9, you will be paying closer to 40% of your monthly adjusted income. Please keep this in mind as you are searching for a unit.

1. Gross Annual Income (if income is a monthly source, multiply by 12; if weekly source, by 52; if hourly, multiply hourly rate x hours per week x 52, etc.)
2. Deductions ($480 per child under 18, or full time student 18+ [12 credits+] or disabled child over 18) and (if head, spouse or sole member is 62+ or disabled, allow $400 deduction) Other deductions may apply. Call your PHA.
3. Annual Adjusted Income (#1 minus #2)
4. Monthly Adjusted Income (#3 ÷ 12)
5. 40% of Monthly Adjusted Income (#4 x .40)
6. 30% of Monthly Adjusted Income (#4 x .30)
7. Difference (#5 minus #6)
8. Payment Standard for Family (the Family Payment Standard for the area you wish to live, is the lower of 1) your family size or 2) the unit size you select. See Payment Standard Schedule or call your PHA)
9. Gross Rent (#8 + #7)
10. Utilities for Selected Unit (See Utility schedule for the unit you wish to live. Select area, unit size, type and utilities and appliances you will be responsible for, or call your PHA)
11. Maximum Contract Rent Allowable (Gross rent from minus utilities or #9 minus)  

Contract Rent for unit MUST not exceed #11
